Welsh Tories call for free parking on high streets

The Tories want to encourage more people to shop at Welsh towns. To boost private business, the Conservatives are proposing changes in the way how business rates are calculated. The Welsh Tories pointed that free parking and cheaper parking rates at certain times would encourage customers back to the town centre high streets. They also proposed to shuttle people into town, like during the lunch breaks, moving them to and out of business parks, by free buses. The assembly’s enterprise committee wanted to revive business in high streets.

Huw Lewis, the Regeneration Minister, responded to a report published in January, saying the government wanted vibrant town centres but also wanted to diversify and not solely rely on retail. Wrexham and Newport councils have tried this strategy of free parking. The manager of St.Tydfils shopping centre located at Merthyr Tydfil, Les Byard, recommended a better active parking strategy with possibly some free parking for a few hours at a time.
