Free health checks have been offered to visitors at a shopping outlet, the Lakeside Village. The Quintile Nurse Team were there throughout the year at the shopping centre, checking the health of more than 500 people. The health check commissioned by NHS Doncaster, allowed only shoppers aged between 40 and 70, having postcode of DN-1 to DN-12 or S64, and those not under the care of a GP for CVD. The team showed how to spot early the symptoms of illness at the health check.
About 200 shoppers were later referred to their GPs, following the health checks to evaluate and identify any health problems. Some 78 people were referred for blood pressure monitoring; a total of 102 were referred for CVD or Cholesterol risk; 4 people were found to be diabetic. The persons referred had no signs of illness prior to the check-up. Centre manger Cheryl Sadler is happy to offer this service and has asked the nursing team to offer the same service throughout 2013 also.
