Free milk offered to school children below the age of five and to those on free school meal might be stopped despite the fact that this practice has been continuing for the last 90 years. This decision was taken by the Government so as to use the fund for some other purpose within the school. However, head teachers of Fylde are finding it hard to make a decision on it.
Henceforth schools will be forced to make their own arrangement to find for a milk supplier. The cost of providing free milk to the students of Lancashire is close to £1m of which one third of the contribution comes from parents, one third comes from the Government and the remaining from the Lancashire County Council.
According to the director of Lancashire County Council, the cost of providing free milk comes to £351,000 and hence from April the fund will be shared on per-pupil basis among primary schools.
Although free milk will be provided to children under five, others belonging to academics, primary-age mainstream schools, special schools and short-stay schools might not get it any more.
