Free event to be hosted for Black History Month by Newbury Library

A free event to be hosted by Newbury Library will be part of the National Black History Month. The free event is marked for 23 October, to be held between 6pm and 8.30pm. Guests will have refreshments, followed by a light buffet and entertainment by the Jamaican Society. The event aims to increase understanding and awareness of Black History. The programme will include interactive discussion with John Binama, who is chair of the Rwandese Community in Bersshire. Subjects covered will be slavery and Berkshire’s connection, persecution during the Rwandan genocide, a short video and an exhibition. Waheeda Soomro is community project manager for the minority ethic forum of West Berkshire. She said the free event would be a celebration of black history and trace evolution of the communities.
