Free WiFi network will be launched to improve broadband infrastructure, Birmingham City Council has announced. Local street infrastructures such a lamp posts will be used as 3G and 4G hotspots.
Thus street furniture will be rented out to the broadband provider to provide service to residents, tourists and workers in Birmingham. Areas such as New Street and Victoria Square will be the first ones to get the rollout if the plan gets approved. Others areas that will be included are High Street, Moor Street, the new library and St Philip’s Cathedral.
By renting out local street furniture the city council can earn additional revenue out of it. Free WiFi service will help to improve life and economic conditions of both people and businesses in the area. The council’s cabinet will take up plans for this project on July 15th 2013.
