Free School at Durham to hold open evenings
The Durham Free School being planned is to be opened in September, in the Durham Gilesgate Sports College premises, which is in Gilesgate, Durham City. Initially it will have 60 places for seven-year-old pupils only and applications can be submitted until 20 May, Monday.
Two open evenings, or information evenings, are to be held on 15 May, Wednesday, at St. Hild and St. Bede College in Gilesgate, at 8pm. The other evening also at 8pm, is on 16 May, Thursday, at New Durham and District Workingman’s Club on Mill Lane. Peter Cantley, the Headteacher, is recruiting the teachers for the school, which will have a Christian ethos, but welcomes all children of other faiths or none. National guidelines on sex education and religious studies will be followed and the National Curriculum and GCSE courses will be taught. The school eventually will be able to move to a permanent site, closer to its target area, hopefully. They are looking for pupils from Cassop, Kelloe, Shincliffe, Bowburn and Coxhoe. A free bus service will be provided for now for students.
