Perfect 32 to offer free oral cancer testing

Perfect 32, a Yorkshire dental practice will offer free mouth cancer checks during Mouth Cancer Awareness Week in November this year. This will be organised to raise awareness of the disease so that people can detect it at early stages to live longer.

An advanced oral cancer screening system called the Velscope will be used during the screening process that is scheduled to take place from November 12 to 16th. Information packs depicting warning signs of mouth cancer will be distributed during the campaign. It will be available at the reception throughout November and hence can be collected and shared with friends and relatives. Persons over the age of 16 who drink, smoke, sexually active and who have a poor diet or have a combination of these are advised to approach for screening.

It has been studied that more than 5,000 people get mouth cancer every year and almost 2,000 people are killed each year. This is found to be 3 times more than cervical cancer for which government has taken certain ventures. Early detection of the disease can raise chances of survival from 50% to more than 90%. Lumps in the neck and ulcers that do not get well within three weeks and red and white patches in the mouth are some of the early signs of this disease.

According to Dr Vinod Joshi, Founder of The Mouth Cancer Foundation, Perfect 32 has joined with many schools, health professionals, dental practices and community groups for the sake of promoting ‘Mouth Cancer Awareness Week’. It has been found that three-quarters of the cases relate to alcohol drinking and smoking and hence smokers must quit the habit and alcohol consumers have to drink moderately. Disease like human papilloma virus (HPV) that is transmitted through oral sex is also a reason for oral cancer.

Free screening will be conducted for the fifth consecutive year at the practice in 8 Ladygate, Beverley. Patients looking forward to attend this free campaign are advised to book for a place by calling on 01482 863 667.
