Free School Lunches for children in England
Your child studying at a school in England could qualify for free lunch, or milk, or for free fruit or vegetables. Local authorities have to provide free lunches to students who are eligible. The authorities should meet specified national nutritional standards. Children are to be provided where requested, paid-for meals. Good facilities to eat safely are to be provided. To qualify as a healthy and balanced diet, certain requirements and controls are to be followed. Parents are required to approach first the school to find out whether they need to apply via the local authorities or the school.
As for providing milk, local authorities and the concerned school can decide on that. If provided, it must be provided free to the children who are eligible for free meals. Children in day care for 2 or more hours in a day, who are under 5, should be given free a drink of milk. Four year old children in Primary Reception Classes at the primary school are included. An infant formula is given to the under one year old children. Children aged 4 to 6 are entitled to a piece of fruit or vegetable under The School Fruit & Vegetable Scheme, daily. All details are available on the website- direct.gov.uk.
