Free family workshops at Somerset House help kids’ creativity

The free family workshops which run every Saturday afternoon, the whole year, are a great place for your kids to explore their creativity. The free workshops take place between 3pm, and 3.30pm on every Saturday afternoon. Suitable age-group for these sessions are 6 to 12 years. To collect the free tickets for the family arts and crafts workshop, get to the information desk at Seaman’s Hall, the same day, at 1pm. Tickets are given on first come, first served basis and spaces are limited .

The workshops inspire both children and families to get into new activities that can be continued at home too. From fashion design and painting, to animation and model-making, the sessions are fun, creative and entertaining. Some programmes included are 3D model making, jungle mask-making and “dreamscape” painting. Participants also have the chance to explore The Embankment Galleries, the Courtauld Gallery and Somerset House.

 

Join free Summer Schools at Oxford University

UNIQ Summer Schools are offering free courses for Year 12 (or equivalent) students in UK state schools and colleges. A number of courses are being offered and 850 places are available and 3000 applications are being expected. The courses aim to give a realistic view of Oxford students’ life. UNIQ participants can live, attend lectures and seminars in the chosen subject at an Oxford college. Applications open on 7 January (Monday) at 10:00 and close at 17:00 on 21 February (Thursday), in 2013 for the summer schools. Students presently in their first year of A-Levels (or equivalent) and from areas and schools with little or no applicants earlier to Oxford, are preferred. Applications from looked after children too will be considered on an individual basis. Learn through the workshops, to be held throughout the week, about applying to Oxford. Oxford tutors will give presentations and talk about what to expect at interviews. The UNIQ offer includes free travel to and from Oxford, accommodation, food and social activities. The summer school team will be a useful point of contact for a student’s career and also for their teachers and parents.

 

Free health checks for job hunters at Bedfordshire

Glad news for job seekers in Bedfordshire as Bedford Borough Council Jobs Hub and NHS Bedfordshire together is offering free health check up to ensure them of health conditions prior to taking up a job. Wellbeing Team and The Horizon Health Choices’ Health is giving away free NHS health checks to visitors of Job Hub commissioned by NHS Bedfordshire. This will take place between 10am and 4pm.

During the check, visitors need to face few questions related to their health conditions and lifestyle and also few tests for cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI and other checks. They will be given advice for treatment depending on the result collected. According to Director of Public Health for NHS Bedfordshire, it will hardly take 20 minutes for health check up and hence job seekers can take up the test after attending their interview.

People aged between 40 and 74 and those who are registered with a Bedfordshire GP are only eligible for free health checks. Also, they must not have been diagnosed for any disease such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease before or must not have gone for NHS Heath Check for the past 5 years.
