Free Here Maps AppRivals to get free maps apps on their devices, Nokia has announced. This new move has been taken to fight against its rivals.

Apple iOS devices will get maps initially offering audio based directions as well as downloadable street plans. Mozilla’s new Firefox operating system will also get Nokia’s new version.

Maps for Amazon’s Kindle tablets, Windows Phone handsets, Garmin sat-nav kits, Flickr are already available. Apart from these four out of every five cars come with in-built map displays. According to Nokia, Google’s Ground Truth project is a real challenger as it puts together data gathered from satellites.

Based on a statement by an industry watcher, Nokia’s Here Maps app is sure to make others use this platform mainly because of its name ‘Here’ rather than its brand name. According to a tech analyst, with the release of this new app Nokia is sure to become a key location cloud player. It will also create quite a few location related services, he added. It has created more opportunities by improving its services by extending their location services to other platforms. Nokia has recently announced that will purchase a Berkley based firm called the Earthmine which creates 3D street level views using the sensor equipped cars.
