Children from low income families aged below five are currently being given free vitamins A, C and D by the NHS. Vitamins are essential for children to safeguard their health, the chief medical officer of England said.
According to Prof Dame Sally Davies, more children can be protected if this scheme is extended. She also added that UK fell behind other European countries in this case. Parents who are eligible to get the benefit can avail free vitamins for children aged six months to four years. National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has been asked to check for the cost effectiveness of giving free vitamins A, C and D to children aged below 5.
Children suffer from various issues such as not exposing themselves well under the sun, children born premature and others due to vitamin deficiency. She is conducting research in the field of mental health as well.
