Although one week free parking till Christmas was announced in Northumberland towns, reports say that it is likely to create a lot of confusion. A meeting will be formed by Peter Jackson, group leader to decide upon this.
However, Conservative councillors have decided to request county council to remove parking fees for one week prior to Christmas in order to boost trade in areas such as Alnwick, Berwick, Hexham, Morpeth and Corbridge. Coun Andrew Tebbutt has said that allowing free parking will create congestion and chaos and would ultimately drive away customers rather than attracting more. The chairperson of Morpeth chamber of trade’s car parking sub-committee has said that free parking would be useful during January and February when trading is likely to become dull.
There are mixed responses from several people in the council. Yet it is expected that a solid conclusion will be drawn upon soon.
