Free breakfast for Blackpool school children from January

Free Breakfast for BlackpoolBlackpool primary school children will soon get free breakfast after the town’s council has approved for the same. It is reported that about 12,000 students will get free cereal, milk, fruit juice or toast from the month of January as a part of 3 month trial.

The scheme will be extended to secondary school students as well if it is found to be successful, Simon Blackburn, leader of the council said. The council reports that the estimated annual cost for the proposed scheme would be around £2.1m.

Blackburn says that provision of free food to school children is likely to improve attendance, behaviour and standards in schools. Children are seen attending class without having their breakfast. Surveys also show that older students take tobacco or alcohol more than their regular breakfast. Hence, the proposed scheme will greatly help to improve child’s behaviour at school, he added.
