Check your blood pressure for free

Blood Pressure UK charity along with the staff at Lincolnshire’s Co-Op pharmacies will conduct free blood pressure checks to help British people know their health condition. The free check will be conducted until September 22 during the Know Your Numbers Week. 44 Co-op stores will be involved in the testing event.

Free checks will be conducted in local branches such as Lincoln, Kirton, Metheringham, Louth, Gainsborough, Holbeach and Donington. Blood pressure can cause heart attacks and strokes and is actually a silent killer. It can also be the cause for dementia and kidney disease. The process involved in checking blood pressure is in fact very easy, simple and painless. Hence, everybody must make use of this great facility.

Sutton Council giving away free 10kg bag of grit

Sutton Council have asked residents to pick up a supply of free grit, as the weather changes. For the 4th year running, Sutton borough residents and businesses will be given 10kg of grit for free, to use on pavements, footpaths or roads in front of their premises or homes, in repartition of cold weather, predicted towards the end of this year.

The scheme pioneered by the council has been followed by other authorities across UK. The free grit will be ready for takers at 4 locations in the borough, on 4 weekends in October. Residents coming to collect the grit will have to produce a current Utility Bill or Sutton Council tax bill/business rates (NNDR). They can collect for a neighbour too, producing their bill and encouraged to be community minded. Good Samaritans are also being encouraged to help elderly residents and those who cannot collect by themselves. Councillor Jill Whitehead, who chairs Sutton Council’s environment and neighbourhood committee, says this scheme is an example of helping each other. Council gritters will do the main roads, bus routes and important parts of the borough, but cannot reach everywhere, she pointed out.
