Children attending classes in Luton schools can have free school meals. All children attending school are eligible, regardless of whether resident in Luton or not. The guardian or parent should be receiving a benefit that qualifies, like the Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance, or any other specified benefit, for the child to avail the free school meal. Children attending at least one session before and one after lunch can avail this free meal at school.
If the child lives in Luton but attends school elsewhere, then they (parent/Guardian) must apply for free meal at the local authority where the school is located. Every application is checked for eligibility. Apply even if you are not sure, to get the benefit if possible. If you apply for Housing and Council Tax benefits, it can be taken as a claim for Free School Meals as well. Eligible school children reaching the age of 16 and entering the school’s 6th form will still be able to have free school meals. There’s no need to reapply as it will be automatically carried over each academic year. However if the child leaves or changes school midway of the year, or moves to another school away from the area, then it may be necessary to apply again.
